Colvin House: A Historic Landmark with Eco-Friendly Efforts
A guest post written by Colvin House
Despite being a historic landmark, Colvin House stays modern and eco-friendly through daily, seasonal, and occasional efforts. Angela Valavanis, the owner and founder of Colvin House, strives to make her business as “green” as possible through multiple avenues. Through composting, unique packages, thrifting, participation in our neighborhood, and location services, Colvin House establishes itself as an environmentally conscious wedding and event venue.

Composting
Colvin House composts! Our weekly concerts, weddings, and special events often produce food waste. To combat this issue, our space has committed itself to composting. Composting can help improve soil health, cut methane emissions from landfills, and reduce waste.
Thrifting
Our event planners, Laura and Sarah, are thrifting geniuses! From vintage furniture to unique glassware to patio seating, we have thrifted it all. Colvin House welcomes gently used pieces into our space to reduce our consumption, eliminate the cost of shipping services and new materials, and support our local community. Who doesn’t love the satisfaction of thrifting the perfect piece?

Elopement Packages
Our newly added elopement packages have created a new lower-cost and more eco-friendly option for individuals looking to tie the knot! A smaller-scale event requires less materials, food, transportation, etc. leading to a more environmentally friendly gathering. If you’re interested or need a last-minute plan, Colvin House has the solution!

Lakeshore Clean-Ups
Last year, we participated in an Alliance for the Great Lakes Beach Clean Up hosted by An Event Less Ordinary and Green Wedding Alliance at Kathy Osterman Beach. This beach, Thorndale Avenue Beach, and Interfaith Park are three outdoor spaces that are near and dear to our historic home and our hearts. By participating in these clean-ups, we are creating cleaner community spaces for our neighbors while spreading education and awareness about the importance of cleanliness, recycling, and shared spaces.

Transportation Access
Colvin House is conveniently located steps away from the Red Line. We encourage wedding parties, event guests, and Colvin Concert go-ers to utilize this convenient transportation service to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. Additionally, we encourage our neighbors to walk or bike to our public events to eliminate the need for parking and congestion in our Courtyard space. Every individual and company effort helps to mitigate our environmental impact!
More than anything, Colvin House is open-minded and willing to change our current practice to become more environmentally friendly. We strive to be a community cornerstone committed to an eco-friendly present and future. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions on how you would like to see our venue improve upon our current practices, do not hesitate to reach out to our staff. We are proud to be part of the Green Wedding Alliance and we are proud of our continued efforts in improving the planet!
